HILDA N. SANCHEZ
EDINBURG - Hilda N. Sanchez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother entered her eternal rest on November 18, 2018, at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was born in Edinburg, Texas on March 15, 1930, to Melchor and Florencia Garza. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Pete Sanchez. She is survived by her three daughters, Judy Martinez, Diana Barron and Sandra M. Avila and her grandchildren Matthew (Marissa) Martinez, Michael (Jessica) Martinez, Cassandra Avila, and Marco Avila, and her great-grandchildren Gabriella, Sophia, Mateo and Michaela Martinez. Also surviving Hilda are her sister Lydia Cantu of Houston, her brothers Octavio Garza of Houston and Leonel Garza of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Otila de la Fuente and brother M. G. Garza.
Hilda was an Honor graduate of Edinburg High School and a member of the Red and Blue Sergeanettes. She was employed for 30 years as a Legal Secretary at the Kelly and Looney Law Firm.
Upon her retirement she was able to devote her full time to the things she loved doing caring for her grandchildren, shopping, reading, gardening, ironing (yes, she loved to iron), cooking and gambling in Las Vegas. She was a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and belonged to the Altar Society. She spent countless hours raising money for The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and countless other charities.
She was known for her quick wit, candor, strong political views and devotion to her family. Mom’s strength, determination and beauty are matched by few and she will be missed greatly.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by her two caregivers Leyda Salazar and Alejandra Lopez-Gonzalez, in addition to the staff of Only Love Hospice Care, with a special thanks to Celia Montoya.
