JOSEPH PHILLIP SAWICKI

ALAMO – Joseph Phillip Sawicki, 86, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg.

Mr. Sawicki was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Memphis High School. He attended University of Alaska and then came to Grand Rapids in 1953 to work on a new airplane project for GM Engineering Department. Joe was a licensed pilot and served in the Air Force Civil Air Patrol as a 1st Lieutenant. He was a member and volunteer at Rio Hondo Air Museum for many years. He was on an oil carrier on the Great Lakes, he spent four years in Alaska, and he operated a Texaco station in Grand Rapids for many years.

He was most proud of servicing Rep. Jerry Ford and Betty’s automobiles. He fondly remembers the time he and President Ford spent in his office. He retired from Grand Rapids Schools in 1986.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Mary Sawicki; a brother, Victor Sawicki; a sister, Theresa Milarski; a nephew, Paul Sawicki; and a grandson, Gregory Shotwell.

Mr. Sawicki is survived by his wife, Bethany Sawicki, of Alamo; a son, Dean (Pamela) Sawicki, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a daughter, Susan (Randy) Piechocki, of Caledonia, Michigan; a stepson, Jeffrey Nunes, of Peachtree City, Georgia; two stepdaughters, Colleen (Michael) Perry, of Jackson, Michigan and Linda (Mark) McGinn, of Ionia, Michigan; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Cremation will take place at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna. As per his wishes there will be no services.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
