HUMBERTO ANDRES SERNA
EDINBURG - Humberto Andres Serna, loving husband, caring father, and veteran of the United States Armed Forces, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012. Humberto was born on November 10, 1946 to Amelia R. and Narciso Serna in Laredo, Texas. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1965 and subsequently joined the United States Air Force; he served two tours of duty overseas during the Vietnam War. Upon returning stateside, he continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve for another twenty years.
In 1972, he started working for the Texas Department of Human Services. He retired in 2003 as Regional Director of Income Assistance for the Texas Department of Public Welfare, Food Stamps Department. After his retirement, he took great joy in spending days with his beloved wife and grandchildren, passing the time in the South Texas outdoors and traveling to visit his children. His quick wit and million-dollar smile will be greatly missed by his friends and relatives. Always ready to tell a story or share a laugh, he was the life of all gatherings. He was kind, compassionate and always unafraid to show his love.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Juan Jose Serna; his daughter, Criselda P. Gonzalez; grandson, Roberto Gonzalez.
Humberto is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Alicia M. Serna; his children, Julissa (David) Riefkohl of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, Wally Pequeño of Houston, Matthew A. Serna of San Francisco, and Emily A. Serna of Austin; his son-in-law, Rolando J. Gonzalez, Sr. of Rio Grande City; and three grandsons, Julian Andrew Riefkohl, Austin Riefkohl, and Rolando J. Gonzalez, Jr.; sisters, Rosa (Gustavo) Zapata of Mission, Maria Teresa (Fernando) De La Garza of Edinburg, and Maria Isabel (Roberto) Gonzalez of Mission; aunt, Margarita R. Lopez of Edinburg; parents-in-law, Santos and Diorica Maldonado of Edinburg.
He will continue to be remembered by his extended family: his sisters-in-law, Yolanda (Ralph) Garza, Naela Moreno, Elva (Armando) Luna, Elizabeth (Rene) Ortega, and brother-in-law Santos (Michelle) Maldonado, Jr., all of Edinburg, and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. He was loved by many during his lifetime and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held today, May 2, 2012, from 3:00 to 9:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm Rosary, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1302 E. Champion in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 S. Inspiration Rd. in Mission. Serving as pallbearers are Carlos De La Garza, Fernando De La Garza, Jr., Ralph Garza, Armando Luna, Santos Maldonado, Jr., and Rene Ortega.
