DONALD F. STOUT
EDINBURG - Donald F. Stout, 79, resident of Edinburg for 72 years, peacefully passed away January 13, 2012, at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg, surrounded by his loving family.
Donald was born February 3, 1932 to Frank and Gladys Stout in Falls City, Nebraska. His family moved to Edinburg in 1938, and he graduated from Edinburg High School in 1949, where he was the quarterback for the Edinburg Bobcats. Donald then attended Edinburg Junior College, which is now UT-Pan American.
He served in the Navy from 1952-53, aboard the USS Estes as a radioman, where they participated in "Operation Ivy" at Eniwetok Atol. "Operation Ivy" exploded the first hydrogen bomb and the largest H bomb at that time. Donald came home on leave and married his high school sweetheart, Marilouis Slaughter in 1953. After the Navy, he went to work for his father-in-law at Slaughter's Grocery Store. In 1956 they formed a partnership, and then proceeded to open five convenience stores-Esquire Food Stores. In 1977 he sold the stores, and then went to work as the manager for Scurlock's in Edinburg, until his retirement in 1993.
Donald in his younger years was an avid woodcrafter, enjoyed fishing, and loved his Dallas Cowboys. He also relished spending time with his electric model train set where he built buildings that were replicas of downtown Edinburg. In his later years you could find Donald drinking coffee with friends, from city officials, former employees, and school board members. Donald and Marilouis also would meet with their Edinburg classmates once a month thru the years for dinner up until his recent illness.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Edinburg and was a former Mason and Shriner.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lester and Chet, and a granddaughter Crystal Stout.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Marilouis of Edinburg; a son, Louis Vance (Karen Flanagan) Stout of McAllen, a brother, Bob Stout of Kingsville; a sister, Margie (Robert) Sledge of Abilene; granddaughters, Stephanie (John) Povolonis of Groton, CT and Misty Stout of Hosford, FL; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and John Vance Povolonis of Groton, CT; former daughter-in-law, Glenis Stout of Hosford, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2012, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg. Military honors will be conducted by Sgt. Benito Alaniz VFW Post #7473 of Elsa. Cremation will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna.
