Antonio "Coach Tony" Trejo, 67, entered eternal rest Monday, July 25, 2022, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Trejo was a lifelong resident of Edinburg and was a former track coach at McAllen ISD and City of McAllen. Coach Tony Trejo "The Legend" greatly impacted the youth of the Rio Grande Valley. His passion was working with athletes and encouraging them to exceed their own expectations. He would say, "It doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish." His words will continue to resonate throughout the RGV. To Coach Trejo, it did not matter what color of uniform you wore or what team you were from, his passion was for all kids to excel in the sport he loved. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched and remembered for his generosity and good will. The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of prayers, love and support.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Adelina Sosa Trejo; his parents, Aguedo and Dominga Trejo; three brothers, Jesus Trejo, Guadalupe "Walle" Trejo, Gilbert Trejo; and a sister, Eulalia "Lali" T. Ibarra.
Tony is survived by three children, Steven (Delma) Trejo of Edinburg, Jesse (Stephanie Mireles) Trejo of McAllen, Jennifer (Jorge Trevino) Trejo of Edinburg; five grandchildren, Derrick Steven, Daryl Sebastian, David Samuel Trejo, Diego Antonio and Liberty Aleena Medina; three sisters, Agueda "Aggie" T. (Ramon) Gonzaba, San Juana "Janie" T. (Martin) Corona, Rosalinda "Rosie" T. (Mike) Salinas, all of Edinburg; his girlfriend, Belen Loya of Weslaco; sister in law, Alice Trejo of McAllen; brother in law, Simon Ibarra Jr. of Weslaco; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary and 6:30 p.m. prayer service Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Gonzaba, Alexis Gonzaba, Gilbert T. Salinas, Margarito "Mikey" Salinas Jr., Joseph "Joey" Corona, and Max Tyrone Lozano.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Armando Gomez, David Vasquez, Arturo "Shorty" Garza, Benny Martinez, Bill Chancey, Danny Vasquez, Lupe Vasquez, Sam Califa, Carlos Ochoa, Tencha Lancaster, Fidel Covarrubias, Rachel De Leon and his cousin Jorge Trejo.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
