SAN JUAN — Maria Zenorina "Nena" Rodriguez Trevino, 81, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.
Maria Zenorina "Nena" always had a song in her heart and a smile on her beautiful face. And now this sleeping beauty is at peace after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She passed peacefully with her family by her side and will always be remembered as a strong spirit who always made her family her #1 priority. A very spiritual person, her strong belief in faith helped her get through this battle.
Nena was born in Weslaco, Texas, on April 23,1929 to Petra and Cenovio Rodriguez, the ninth of 11 children. As a young teenager, she and her sister, Minerva "Minnie," became known as "Las Hermanitas Rodriguez" and performed throughout the Rio Grande Valley, Texas and California. They were inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame in 2006.
Music was Nena's first love, but she also loved a handsome young sailor named Teofilo Trevino of San Juan who was stationed in San Diego, Calif. They were married on Sept. 7, 1952 and began a wonderful life together in San Juan, raising five children.
Through the years, Nena and her sister continued to sing at family gatherings and other social events. She loved her family and embraced all her extended family, which included 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She never judged or had a bad word to say about anyone. A striking woman, Nena had a passion for fashion and was always well dressed.
