BRIDGET VELA
PHARR- Bridget Vela, 89, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018, at San Juan Nursing Home.
Born in Pharr, she was a lifetime member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, a Catechist, and she was also a member of The Legion of Mary. Bridget graduated from P.S.J.A. High School in 1947 and was an integral part of her siblings’ lives in ensuring them an education. Bridget dedicated over 50 years of her life as Head Manager and Principal buyer for the San Juan Catholic Shrine Store now known as the Basilica of San Juan. Ms. Vela was an avid reader, she also loved watching football on TV and especially enjoyed seeing her brothers play football for the P.S.J.A. Bears. Ms. Vela enjoyed traveling and painting. (She created beautiful unique pieces of art for her family and donated many paintings to different organizations.) Bridget will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesus and Porfiria Vela; two sisters, Celia (Jose) Delgado, Anastacia Gonzalez; and a brother, Reyes Vela.
She is survived by six siblings, Gilberto (Hortencia) Vela of Edinburg, Emilio (Janice) Vela, Maria (+Emilio) Salazar, both of Pharr, Lupita (+Matt) Alvarado of Portland, OR, Carlos (Enedelia) Vela of San Juan, Jesus (Idolina) Vela, Jr. of Alamo; one brother-in-law, Roy Gonzalez of Pharr; one sister-in-law, Anita Vela of Pharr; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2018, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
Pallbearers will be Ariel Jesus Vela, Emilio Vela, Jr., Mario Vela, Jaime Vela, Emilio Salazar, Jr. and Xavier Vela.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
