Petra Gonzalez Vera, 97, of Edinburg, Texas & Overland Park, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2021, surrounded in love by her adoring family.
Petra was one of five children born in 1924 to Abelino & Lucinda Gonzalez of La Grulla, Texas. Petra met her future husband & the love of her life in the second grade. Arnoldo Vera & Petra were married for 52 years before his passing in 2000. Petra's legacy will always be as the fiercely proud matriarch whose passion in life was spending time with her son, daughters & extended family. She will also be remembered for her hard work ethic. Alongside her husband she raised cattle, planted crops, & was a foreman for working crews on their crop-rotating farm all the while raising her family.
After Petra's children were grown she pursued a lifelong goal of attending college where she excelled in every class she took. Her children often joked she made better grades than they had in college. Concurrently with college, she went on to work for the Rio Grande City School District for many years. Many will recollect Petra's for her wonderful cooking skills & warm generous hospitality she extended to everyone she knew. But her greatest achievement was being the best & most loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend & God-fearing woman. A yearly cruise with her daughters was something she looked forward to all year, and those memories will be forever cherished.
We will miss her wit, wise sayings, honesty, unconditional love, and high standards without compromise for her family.
The most wonderful thing now is that through her faith she knew she would be reunited with her husband Arnoldo and her beloved son, Arnold (Beve) Vera Jr. All lives well-loved and forever mourned.
She is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Vera (James) Ford, Hortensia Vera (Roel) Pena; daughter-in-law, Yoli Vera; six grandchildren, Chris Ford, Kelley Ford (Nathan) Couch, Christina Pena (Felix) Salazar, Erika Pena (Fred) Palacios, Ashley Vera (Kevin) Hajazi, Vanessa Vera (Matt) Garza; ten great-grandchildren, Logan and Lauren Ford, Lleyton, Vivien, and Darby Couch, Aidan and Ella Salazar, Lily, Rico, and Ava Palacios; and many loving nieces and nephews.
