EDINBURG – Romeo Manuel Villarreal, 80, went to be with the Lord, after a lengthy illness, Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at his residence in Edinburg.
Born in Brooks County, Romeo was raised in San Manuel, and had lived in Edinburg most of his life. He was self-employed in real estate, farming-ranching; was primarily an educator; formerly director of Hidalgo County Migrant Program; ACCEDC, former Acting City Manager for the City of Edinburg, Board of Trustees Member for ECISD and South TX ISD for 31 years, former President and Member of Edinburg Noon Lions Club and many other service organizations; was founder of Edinburg Child Care, Inc., a USDA nutrition program.
He is preceded in death by two sons, John (Nidia) Villarreal and Joshua Rene (Ysenia) Villarreal a twin sister, Julieta Villarreal; his parents, Jesus Leopoldo and Leonor Garza-Villarreal; a brother, Jesus Villarreal, Jr.; and a sister, Thelma Garcia.
Romeo is survived by his wife, Maria Martinez Villarreal; three sons, Romeo Ricardo (Alma) Villarreal, Michael Allen (Diana) Villarreal, Marco Corona; two daughters, JoYvonne Villarreal (Thomas Nevanen), Gylma (Richard) Garza, all of Edinburg; 13 grandchildren; and two sisters, Irma Vallejo and Agustina Torres. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Chapa Garza Cemetery in San Manuel. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg. Online guest book available.
